Collection: Abi Birkinshaw

We are thrilled to be showcasing the amazing work of MFA artist Abi Birkinshaw in our online gallery at Eben Contemporary.

After graduating with an MFA and BA (Hons) in fine art from Cardiff School of Art in 2019, Abi has developed a powerful new still-life language combining everyday domestic images, passing comments and inner thoughts.

 ‘I make paintings that talk about my own lived experience; they are a synthesis of my day-to-day life. My most recent paintings are influenced by the sense of home and belonging’. ‘The act of painting is thinking time; it’s a means of processing and dealing with things that I don’t really like talking about’

The fragments of text add tension to what may seem like mundane settings of everyday objects. Her emphasis on the raw narrative and conflicts between her inner thoughts and surroundings through skilled, subversive mark making and experimental composition, give her work a contemporary aesthetic with a nod to art history.  

Abi plays with motifs, perspective, space and composition to conjure intriguing images of the fragility of life. She is a stand out artist with a bright future.
